I own a Dell Laptop which was purchased within the UK.
However it also has a fax modem where on earth I can connect it to a phone line and fax directly from the print preference.
Will this work in Australia?

My Australian computer works contained by the UK. As long as you have the right adapter so you can plug it into the wall I am not sure why here might be a problem.
You need to check the modem documentation. Some are not passed for use surrounded by other countries (if you use them and damage the phone circuits, you pay). Most enjoy a software switch to make them compatible (mine does). Some inevitability a suppressor suitable for the other country. And make sure you use the right converter.
